EDITION 003DOCUMENTATION

Flyer
Setup guide

The free one. Installing takes about two minutes, without code. The same guide ships inside your download as INSTALLATION.md.

1. Unpack the download

What you receive is a bundle, not the theme itself. Inside it:

FileWhat it is
flyer-theme.zipThe theme. This is the file you upload to Shopify.
INSTALLATION.mdThis guide, offline.
LICENSE.mdWhat you may and may not do with FLYER.
CHANGELOG.mdWhat changed in this release.

The most common mistake is uploading the outer zip. Shopify will refuse it — it wants flyer-theme.zip.

2. Upload the theme

  1. In your Shopify admin: Online Store → Themes.
  2. Under Theme library: Add theme → Upload zip file.
  3. Pick flyer-theme.zip (the inner file — do not unzip it).
  4. FLYER appears in your library as a draft.

FLYER is Online Store 2.0 and works on any Shopify plan from Basic up. No paid app, no external dependency — no jQuery, no CDN, no tracking.

3. Preview before you publish

Click ⋯ → Preview on the FLYER card. Nothing your customers see changes until you hit Publish, so take your time. When you're happy: ⋯ → Publish.

5. Colour schemes — the one idea to grasp

You don't set colours section by section. You define a handful of schemes once (background, text, button, button label, shadow) under Theme settings → Colors, and each section then simply picks the scheme it uses. Change a scheme and everything using it updates at once.

Five schemes ship ready to use. Edit them, or add your own. Secondary text and border colours are derived from each scheme, so contrast stays above WCAG AA whichever palette you choose.

6. Theme settings

130 settings across 21 groups, all under the gear icon at the bottom of the editor sidebar:

7. Sections

Click Add section on any template. FLYER ships 23 sections, each with a ready preset:

  • Showcase — slideshow, image banner, image with text, collage, multirow, multicolumn, video.
  • Commerce — featured collection, collection list, featured product, quick order list.
  • Content — rich text, page content, collapsible content (FAQ), featured blog, contact form.
  • Utility — announcement bar, newsletter, email signup banner, country and language selectors, custom Liquid, app container.

The custom Liquid section is not checked by the theme: a syntax error there can break the page, so preview before publishing.

8. Page templates

Product, collection, collection list, blog, article, search, cart, 404, password, gift card and the whole customer account area are included and need no setup.

One template is assigned by hand, in Online Store → Pages ("Template" dropdown on the right):

Page to createTemplate to assign
Contactpage.contact

Store policies (refund, privacy, terms) are written once in Settings → Policies and Shopify renders them automatically at /policies/…, inside the theme's header and footer. For a legal page you want in the menu — terms of sale, legal notice — just create a regular Page: the default template already sets it in the same centred reading column.

9. Cart

  • Theme settings → Cart — side drawer or dedicated page.
  • Order note — lets customers leave a message with their order.
  • Empty cart — pick a collection to show when the cart has nothing in it.

10. Product page

  • Express payment buttons — Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay, so a buyer can pay in one tap. The switch is Show dynamic checkout buttons, on the Buy buttons block of the product section. They come from Shopify, so they only appear once accelerated checkouts are on in Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Manage → Wallets, and each visitor only sees what their device supports.
  • Shop Pay Installments — the “pay in instalments” notice under the price appears on its own when your store is eligible. Nothing to switch on in the theme.
  • Unit price — for anything sold by weight, volume or length, the price per unit shows on the product page and on product cards. It appears only once you set a unit of measure on the variant, in the product’s pricing block, and it follows the selected variant. Required in the EU by Directive 98/6/EC.
  • Recommendations — the Related products section has a Recommendation type setting: Related picks products automatically, Complementary shows the ones you pair by hand in the free Search & Discovery app. Add the section twice to show both rows. It can only be added on the product template.

11. Good to know

  • Works without JavaScript — add to cart, variant selection, filters, search and the cart all keep working if scripts fail to load.
  • English only — FLYER ships with English theme content. Any other language goes through Shopify's standard system: Settings → Languages → Add language, then Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit default theme content. Need French out of the box? Lumiere is also free and ships EN + FR.
  • Payment logos — the footer can display the payment methods your store actually accepts. Turn on Show payment icons on the footer section; the logos come from Shopify, so the row reflects what is enabled in Settings → Payments.
  • Updates — the version you download stays yours. New releases are announced by email; upgrading is always your call.
